Portrait of Ali Efe Kışlak

A physics graduate student in Paris working on quantum materials — and, between experiments, a videographer and app developer.

[01]About

I study physics at Sorbonne Université, curious about what matter does when you shrink it to a few atoms. Before Paris: five years in İzmir, from thin-film labs to DFT simulations. Away from the lab I am usually on the water — or behind a camera, or building an app.

Focus
Condensed matter, nanoscience, quantum materials
Off the clock
Sailor, windsurf instructor, chess player

[02]Superposition

Which waveform of Ali Efe collapses for you?

Three states, one person. Choose one and the wavefunction collapses.

[03]Method

One method, three media.

A lab, a film set and a code editor look nothing alike. Underneath, each one asks the same four things of me — and in each, I only trust what I have built myself.

  1. 01

    Look closely

    Lab
Characterize before theorizing — FTIR, PL and TEM show what is really there.
    Set
Scout the location and the light before choosing a single lens.
    Code
Watch how people work today and note what slows them down.
  2. 02

    Build a model

    Lab
Set up the structure in DFT and predict before measuring.
    Set
Storyboard until every shot has a job.
    Code
Sketch the screens and the data before writing a line.
  3. 03

    Test it against reality

    Lab
Where the measurement disagrees with the model is where the physics is.
    Set
Review on set and reshoot while the light is still there.
    Code
Put a small version in real hands early.
  4. 04

    Simplify

    Lab
Keep the explanation that survives the data.
    Set
Cut until every second earns its place.
    Code
Remove features until it feels obvious.
